Geotechnical Engineering

Our nationwide staff perform foundation condition analysis, drilled pier inspections, deep foundation inspections, quarry investigations, and prepare associated reports.

Geotechnical Engineering team investigates subsurface conditions and materials to determine the physical, mechanical, and chemical properties relevant to a particular project. Investigating and compiling data from soil and rock samples allows the assessment of potential risks posed by existing site conditions; and for structures and earthwork to be built according to specifications and requirements. We strive to ensure preliminary geotechnical exploration can prevent unforeseen and costly complications prior to construction and provide informative data to be used in the development of a site to ensure structural integrity and longevity.

Geophysics

Atlas’ geophysical services can provide valuable information regarding engineering, infrastructure, and design projects. Geophysical methods provide innovative and cost-effective solutions to help investigate site structural, geotechnical, geologic, and hydrologic conditions as well as subsurface infrastructure. Hiring a geophysical professional early, can often reduce site exploration costs and minimizing unexpected site conditions.

Our geophysical staff have backgrounds in geotechnical, environmental, and construction, which provide them with first-hand knowledge of our clients’ needs and potential challenges. In addition to standard safety and quality compliance training, they have special certifications and training associated with oil refineries, railroads, transportation authorities, mines, military, and MEC/UXO evaluations.

Atlas Geophysical Methods:

  • 3D seismic and resistivity visualization
  • Downhole and crosshole shear wave studies
  • Electrical resistivity profiles and soundings including land and marine Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT)
  • Electromagnetic (EM) studies
  • Gravity studies
  • Ground penetrating radar (GPR) profiling
  • Hybrid Source Magnetotelluric (HSAMT)
  • Induced Polarization (IP)
  • Magnetic studies
  • Seismic refraction and reflection studies
  • Surface wave (ReMi & MASW) studies
  • Vibration monitoring

These geophysical methods are often useful in environmental remediation, renewable energy, and developmental projects evaluating groundwater resources; rock rippability; stratigraphy; deep structural geology; soil corrosivity, contamination plumes; landfills; buried underground structures; underground storage tanks (USTs); utilities; mineral deposits; faults and fractures; abandoned wells; concrete condition; rebar location; unexploded ordnance (UXO) / Munitions of Exploding Concern (MECs); grave/burial sites; sinkholes and voids.
