The proposed project widens US 41/SR 3, an urban principal arterial, from Northgate Drive in Fulton County to Paces Mill Road in Cobb County, including replacement of a bridge over the Chattahoochee River. Local street name changes from Northside Parkway in Fulton County (east of the Chattahoochee River) to Cobb Parkway in Cobb County (west of the Chattahoochee River).
The proposed project will widen US 41/SR 3 to a 6-lane urban facility with a 20-foot raised median, a 12-foot multi-use path on the east side of US 41/SR 3, and a 5-foot sidewalk on the west side of US 41/SR 3. The project will also replace an existing bridge over the Chattahoochee River due to its low sufficiency rating of 47, its age (originally constructed in 1935), and the fact that its width is insufficient to carry projected traffic volumes. The proposed bridge is 4 span, bulb tee, PSC beam bridge with sloped abutments.
The project requires the staged construction of the bridge to maintain traffic via the existing bridge during construction. Atlas’ environmental staff is responsible for completing all necessary environmental documentation for the project including a re-evaluation for a Categorical exclusion that was originally approved in 1997. In addition to engineering services, Atlas developed a project concept and designed a traffic signal system.
Atlas’ services included concept, environmental and design. Cobb County has an agreement with GDOT to provide engineering, environmental clearance and right-of-way acquisition with GDOT reimbursing for right-of-way and letting the project to construction using Federal Aid funds.
